5 Types of food to eat for a healthy and clear complexion

A clear and healthy complexion can do wonders for your confidence, and whilst outbreaks of embarrassing acne are commonly associated with our teenage years for many people it doesn’t end there.

Outbreaks of spots and adult acne affect a huge portion of the population, and whilst there are plenty of effective beauty treatments like microdermabrasion, chemical peels and acne scar treatment available you can also help to keep your complexion clear yourself by eating the right foods.

Green tea

Drinking green tea has many health benefits and will improve the health of your whole body not just your skin.  Green tea is high in vitamins C, D and K, riboflavin, zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron.  It is also rich in antioxidants which are great for protecting your skin and reducing inflammation.  Green tea also contains a lot of polyphenols, polyphenols eliminate free radicals that can cause cancer and reactivate dying skin cells.  So if you’re only going to make one change to your diet, make it a switch to green tea!

Berries

Berries like blackberries, blueberries and strawberries are all high in antioxidants which not only combat skin damage but also promote cell turnover to keep your pores nice and clear and prevent outbreaks.

Fish and seafood

Fish and seafood contain lots of healthy fatty acids, zinc and Omega 3 which help to keep your complexion clear and glowing.  Zinc is great for preventing outbreaks of acne and omega 3 reduces inflammation and dryness of the skin.  Omega 3 also improves your circulation which is not only great news for your overall health but also essential for healthy skin.

Whole grains

Swap your white pasta, rice and bread for healthier whole grain options.  Whole grains contain a lot of antioxidants that help to combat skin damage.  Wheat germ also contains the B-vitamin biotin which stops your skin from becoming too dry.

Red and green vegetables

Your parents don’t say “eat your vegetables, they’re good for you” for nothing! Both red and green vegetables provide your body with antioxidants and nutrients that will help to fight inflammation.  Leafy green vegetables are also packed with vitamin A which helps to prevent cell damage and premature ageing.
