Top 5 tips for younger and healthier looking skin

Whilst beauty treatments like Botox, chemical peels and microdermabrasion can all help you to achieve healthier and younger looking skin, it’s also important to look after your skin with a healthy lifestyle.  If you find you skin looking dull, tired and stretched in between beauty treatments it could be time to change your lifestyle.  Following these 5 skincare tips will help you to naturally improve the appearance of your skin, and you'll feel healthier and happier too!

Use sun protection

UVA and UVB rays from the sun are harmful and damaging to your skin.  If you leave your skin exposed to a lifetime of damage from the sun then you risk suffering from wrinkles, sun blotches, sunspots and even skin cancer.  In order to protect your skin simply incorporate applying sun protection to your skin into your daily routine.  Lots of moisturisers that you can find in the supermarkets and cosmetics retailers include sun protection.  Girls will also find that some foundations and other makeup products include sun protection.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is not only essential for achieving healthy looking skin but also for your overall health and mood.  If you’re prone to insomnia, late nights, or poor quality sleep then it’s time to change your lifestyle if you want radiant skin!  Some great tips for getting a good night’s sleep include getting plenty of exercise, keeping a regular bedtime routine, don’t eat a big meal too close to bedtime, don’t drink caffeine before bed, and try to do something relaxing like reading or having a bath immediately before bedtime.

Eat and drink healthily

Drinking enough water is one of the key secrets to getting the young, hydrated, plump and healthy skin that you dream of.  Another way to improve the condition of your skin is to eat a healthy and balanced diet.  Fruits like blackberries, plums, strawberries and blueberries are all very high in antioxidants which are great for your skin.  Fatty acids can be found in salmon, canola oil, flax seeds and walnuts which are great for making healthy cell membranes in your body.  Cell membranes hold water in to give your skin a plump and healthy appearance.

Don’t smoke

Smoking is an absolute no-no if you want to have healthy skin.  Smoking causes your skin to age much quicker as it breaks down the collagen in your body and also stops your body from producing as much collagen as a non-smoker.  Without collagen your skin loses its elasticity and plumpness and becomes prone to wrinkles and appearing dull and stretched.

Clean and moisturise your skin daily

It’s important to make sure that you have developed a daily cleansing routine to keep your skin free of dirt and bacteria.  This is particularly important for women who wear makeup, if you regularly go to sleep with your makeup still on it will cause damage to your skin.  Choose a cleanser which is mild and avoid strong or perfumed soaps as these can irritate your skin.  Moisturising your skin daily helps to protect it and keep it looking plump and healthy because it seals in your skin’s moisture.
